Bedfordview is a town located on the East Rand, and is one of many towns in Southern Gauteng that owe its development to the presence of gold. The name Bedfordview has an interesting origin: in 1926, a naming competition was held, and the name Bedfordview was given first prize - the winner being a little girl who thought that the farm Bedford had a beautiful view. It was thereafter named Bedford View. Over time, the name has shortened to the single word: Bedfordview.

Bedfordview is made up of seven smaller suburbs which are Bedford Gardens, Bedford Park, Essexwold, Morninghill, Oriel, Sederwood and St.Andrews. Within these suburbs, Bedfordview contains a wide range of recreational activities. The Eastgate mall is located just off the N12 highway East of Bruma Lake, and contains over one-hundred stores. The Bedfordview Country Club plays host to many sporting activities such as, athletics, cricket, hockey, bowls, tennis, squash as well as soccer and baseball for juniors. Also at the Bedfordview Country Club, is a Virgin Active which, in this era is essential to healthy living. The Glendower Golf Club, which is famous for hosting the SA Open Championship in 2013, is situated directly between Bedfordview and Edenvale.
